The US Global Initiative urges the United States and NATO to stand up to Russia’s attacks on activists.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has allegedly been poisoned, the latest in a string of assaults on critics of the Putin regime.

The apparent poisoning would be the sixth such attack on Russian opposition activists in the past five years. US national security adviser Robert O’Brien said that the apparent poisoning was “extraordinarily concerning” and could potentially affect US relations with Russia.

However, the past is prologue.  The United States has failed to hold Russia to account both in rhetoric and substance for their attacks on dissidents.  They have refused to stand up to Russian aggression on the periphery of NATO, in partner nations Georgia and Ukraine, not to mention the wholesale takeover of Crimea.

The United States only acts when the U.S. Congress compels them to do so, and even then they are rarely enforced with vigor.  President Putin continues his election interference, murderous campaign, and territorial ambitions because he has failed to receive appropriate pushback.

The United States Global Initiative urges the United States, working with her allies, to strongly condemn these actions and work towards deterring them.

The United States shall:

6.1 Strengthen the most successful alliance in history.

6.2 Insist on increased allied burden-sharing to raise military preparedness.

6.3 Counter undemocratic instincts of Alliance members. NATO cannot have tolerance for the undemocratic actions of its member states.

6.4 Stand up to Russian aggression, in Crimea, Ukraine, and in Allied areas of operation.

The United States Global Initiative is an apolitical, non-partisan not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the premise that America and the World are more stable, freer, and more prosperous when the United States leads.
